Academic Events & Competitions
While we expect all of our students to become proficient in the main academic areas of math, science, social studies, and language, we realize each student has different gifts and interests. To allow students to pursue those areas of interest, we offer a variety of academic events and competitions for students. These events allow students who are interested or gifted in a certain academic area to go further than the curriculum and compete against students from other Christian schools.
ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) Math by Mail
Students in grades 3-8 can participate in the ACSI Math by Mail Olympics. Each classroom teacher selects several students from each grade who have a strong aptitude in math computation or math problem solving to compete against other students from the Ohio River Valley ACSI Region. Students take a series of short, timed math tests which are sent off and scored at the regional level.
ECA and ACSI Spelling Bee
Students in grades 1-8 participate in a classroom spelling bee. The top 3 spellers participate in the school-wide spelling bee, with students spelling words from their grade-level list. The top 2 spellers at each grade level can advance to the ACSI district spelling bee. After that level, there is a regional spelling bee and a national spelling bee in Washington, D.C. In 2007, ECA student Stephen Willis advanced to the national ACSI spelling bee in Washington, D.C.
ECA and ACSI Science Fair
All students in grades 1-8 participate in the ECA Science Fair. Students plan, design, and create a science fair project for the ECA Science Fair in February. Students present their projects to a panel of judges who score the projects according to a scoring rubric. The judges select top projects to represent ECA at the ACSI District Science Fair.
National Geographic Bee
Students in grades 4-8 participate in a classroom geography bee. The top 2 students from each classroom bee can participate in the ECA Geography Bee. The student that wins the school-wide bee takes a written test to try to qualify for the state level National Geographic Bee. Winners at the state level can advance to the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. In the 3 years of competing in this bee, our 3 school-wide winners all qualified for the state level bee.
